BACK TO MY COUNTRY

On December 14th I came back to my country, Colombia, but actually my trip began on December 13th. Because my plane left at 5:30 in the morning I had to be at the airport at 3:30am, so I decided to go to there the day before and spent all night long there. I arrived to Logan airport at 11:30 pm by bus. It was an eternal and bored night, seating on a chair with my baggage beside me all the time. I would have arrived later, yet the price of the taxis in Boston is impossible for me, so bus and Metro were my best options.

After six hours of wait, finally I took the plane to Fort Lauderdale. The airplane wasn’t comfortable, the space between seats was small and the temperature inside was terrible.

After three and a half hours I arrived in Florida and immediately I took the next plane to Colombia, almost four hours more.

When I arrived to the airport my mother and my aunt were waiting for me. The weather in Bogota was terrible; a lot of rain. Moreover I had forgotten how messy Bogota was. Traffic jam, streets crowded, and big holes on the roads. Even though, I was glad to be in my hometown again.

In my parent’s house I gave some presents to my father, mother, and sisters. I had lunch with them and I told them some stories of my trip in Boston and my experiences. They were happy to have me in town again. Later at night I went to my own house where I life alone. I unpacked my baggage and put in order some things. Actually, was hard to adapted myself again, I miss my student life in New England. I spent a really good time there, and I met nice people from different countries.

I hope some day I could have a similar experience as I had in Boston, I really enjoy it.

This post is just for practice my writing skills.

BERTUCCI’S ITALIAN RESTAURANT

If you are thinking to have an unforgettable pizza, eat delicious bread and have a great moment for a reasonable price, o Bertucci’s is the right place.

The day when I went to Bertucci’s the spot was crowded, but the wait didn’t take too much time. Additional the server showed the menu and offer something to drink.

The informal atmosphere was perfect and the Italian mood made me felt comfortable. When a place to sit got free the serve moved to there. The table was in order and clean. Napkins well folded and knife and fork were inside it. The menu is varied but without too many topics that help to take an easy decision. While I was taking a decision of what I wanted to order, a portion of hot and fresh bread was served. The bread is baked in a stone oven, it is simply fantastic. It is served with a side of olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

The appetizers were diverse. I had a Mozzarella Fritta: Breaded mozzarella pan-fried in extra-virgin olive oil and served over plum tomato sauce with fresh basil and a sprinkle of Romano cheese. It was good, rich in flavor, but a little bit greasy. Because I have finished my drink the serve was ready to make a refill. I love places with refill. You just have to pay one soda.

The pizzas of Bertucci’s are pretty famous and I have heard very good comments about them, so I decided to have a individual The Bertucci: pepperoni, chunky tomato sauce and extra

Mozzarella cheese. The taste was marvelous, with enough top of each topic and crispy crust. The size was perfect for one person. If you want to make you dinner more sophisticate you can order the wine menu with Chilean, Argentinean, Italian, and French wines.

For dessert I decided to order a Cannoli: A crispy pastry freshly-filled with Italian ricotta and bittersweet chocolate chips. Dusted with powdered sugar. It also was quite good, neither too sweet nor without taste.

To conclude, the price is so good, with $20 dollars you can have a very interesting supper, well served and in a nice place.

Thanksgiving Day - Real truth

Thanksgiving Day is a very important holyday in United States. For the common people it is a special date to be grateful for good things and spend good moment in family. For them it doesn’t commemorate anything specific or doesn’t have a shameful and bloody meaning. Thanksgiving Day is family, food, and the beginning of the Christmas. People don’t care about the history behind this day.

The historical truth is not only muddled, but also altered to make it a great moment. May be the history about Pilgrims and the Native American people is not totally true. Probably they never were friends and natives didn’t help the new people. The most likely could be that Pilgrims since the beginning attack the inhabitants of this land, and considered them as they enemies. History has the tendency of create creational myths around some events, yet always these events have a real history that society prefers to keep hidden. Even if the real history is known for the public, people are continuing celebrating because it is a tradition. Try to change this cultural event could take much effort and time. Thanksgiving is deep-seated in the society.

In my opinion people should continuous celebrating Thanksgiving Day even is the history behind is shameful and bloody. The nation doesn’t celebrate the death of many native people, they celebrate or thank in family and eating a special food.

For example, Christmas for many people has lost its real significance. Many years ago it was an exclusively Christian holiday, yet nowadays it is almost a global holiday spread by the capitalistic system. I know this topic has a different history, but I wanted to illustrate to show how the real meaning of the things has changed by the time.

In Colombia all the time the truth is hidden or suppressed to keep the confidence in the government. In some cases some groups know the real true but they don’t have enough power to change the official history.

Also in United States are some cases where the historical truth has been muddled or suppressed. Kennedy’s homicide is a good example. The real true about this significant topic is unknown for the common people and the official version is not convincing. Similarly, the Marilyn Monroe’ case is still very dark and confuse, nobody know the real history about her murder. It can help to keep the mythic intact. Always are different interests behind history to keep the status quo.

Bowling for Columbine

In this post I would like to talk a little bit in relation to my opinion about Bowling for Columbine. I really like this movie because it can express my feelings about gun control. Also how this issue is has been leaded in United States. Michael Moore shows some situations and events where firearms have been involved. The right to carry and bear guns has gotten damages than benefits to the American society. Nevertheless, in my opinion Moore manipulated some things in the movie. He just wants to show his point of view and put away other positions. He isn’t objective and uses the humor to ridicule the different opinions. Even though is well know that he is totally against Second Amendment, his biggest problem is that he is not absolutely truthful.

However, I enjoyed the movie and after watch it, I’m able to confirm that gun control is absolutely necessary to avoid a lot of the crimes in US.

Gun control

Terrorism has taken great importance since 09/11 in US, in fact it has been affected the entire world. Nowadays everybody feel paranoia, anyone feel panic and everybody has become suspect. Moreover since 09/11 the people feelings have changed, some people think that anybody, even the government or armed forces, cannot protect them and them families against terrorist.

This could be one of the reasons why some people have decided to buy a gun for self-defense. But, can people defense themselves against terrorism with a gun?

Nevertheless, there are some other reasons to be in favor of maintaining the Second Amendment of the U.S. According to National Rifle Association – Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) http://www.nraila.org/, the right to carry guns helps to halt or prevent crime. But the question is whether the crime rates have lowered or on the contrary have increased.

On the other hand, people and groups in favor of gun control, check at http://www.bradycampaign.org/, argue that right to carry firearms is dangerous, increase criminality and the deaths, and increase the number of teens and children died from gun bullets. http://www.millionmommarch.org/

Gun control also is an important issue in the recent presidential campaign, commonly Republicans and conservative people are against gun control, and Democrats and liberal people are in favor of the gun control and in the prevention of gun violence.

I believe that gun control is necessary to prevent crimes, this topic not only affects U.S. also has an effect on my country, Colombia, many of the guns that have been sold in U.S. finally they finish on hands of terrorist groups that are financed by drugs traffic, consequently, thousand of peoples have died.

Moreover, the right to bear fire guns has a big impact over the young population in States. According to Brady Campaign, “In 2005, eight young people aged 19 and under were killed a day by a firearm in the United States. In 2006, 48 per day were non-fatally wounded. The scourge of gun violence frequently attacks the most helpless members of our society - our children”. Nevertheless, more groups within society are affected by firearms, for example women, research made by Brady Campaign, “Guns and domestic violence make a deadly combination. A 2003 study indicated that the presence of a gun in the home made it 6 times more likely that an abused woman would be murdered than other abused women.

In my opinion, those reasons are enough to change the law, leave away the Second Amendment and avoid too many deaths of innocent people.
